The southbound lanes of the I-5 freeway near Smokey Bear Road was shutdown for hours Wednesday afternoon due to a seven-patient traffic collision.
A GMC Suburban with six occupants was stopped in the number two lane on the southbound side of the I-5, according to a report by California Highway Patrol Officer Josh Greengard.
Around 1 :30 p.m., a man was driving a Toyota Prius southbound on the I-5, in same lane as the Suburban, did not notice the stopped vehicle and crashed into the rear of the Suburban, said Greengard.
About 45 minutes after the crash, a SigAlert was issued for the entire southbound I-5 for LACoFD and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to land helicopters to transport two adults and four children to three different hospitals — Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, Northridge Hospital Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, said Greengard.
Two adults had critical injuries, one adult had moderate injuries and the children had minor injuries from the crash, Greengard said. While there were seven patients, six were airlifted.
All lanes of the freeway were opened shortly after 5 p.m.
Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor in this traffic collision, said Greengard.

I was there when it all happened. Myself my brother and along with approximately 5 other guys helped with the situation. We broke the doors open on the prius to help but the impact was too hard and his leg was stuck. Just way too much happened to list. Very sad and scary moment.
