In the race for California’s 38th Assembly District, Democratic challenger Christy Smith is now ahead by 5,164 votes over Republican incumbent Dante Acosta, according to officials’ latest tally of mail-in and provisional ballots for the Nov. 6 general election reported Tuesday afternoon.
The updated figures are from Los Angeles and Ventura County registrars because the 38th District includes areas of both counties.
Smith now has 69,632 or 52.93 percent of the votes counted to Acosta’s 61,915 or 47.07 percent.
On Tuesday, Nov. 20, the count in LA County was 66,473 votes or 52.75 percent for Smith to Acosta’s 59,547 or 47.25 percent.
In Ventura County, Smith has 24,843 votes (47.56 percent) and Acosta has 27,396 votes (52.44 percent) as of Tuesday afternoon.
Last Wednesday, Nov. 21, Smith had 22,995 votes (47.06 percent) to Acosta’s 25,870 (52.94 percent).
Smith’s total in both counties is 94,475 (51.4 percent) votes to Acosta’s 89,311 (48.6 percent), a lead of 5,164 votes.
On Wednesday, Smith’s total in both counties was 89,468 to Acosta’s 85,417, a lead of 4,051 votes.
On Election Night, Acosta’s overall lead was 1,222 votes.
Acosta conceded the race to Smith Wednesday, Nov. 14, as the count of provisional and mail-in ballots nears conclusion.
As of Monday afternoon, 100,000 provisional ballots remained to be counted just in Los Angeles County. Of those, roughly 4 percent should be from the 38th Assembly District.
The next update from LA County registrar is Wednesday, Nov. 28, while the Ventura registrar’s next update is slatedf for Monday, Dec. 3. The election results are not final until the count is complete and certified.
