Student Television Network (STN), a national association of high school and middle school media programs, has announced plans for its 2014 academy programs for middle school and high school students.
The academies will be held the week as follows:
SANTA CLARITA/LOS ANGELES AREA: June 16-20 (middle school only)
SAN DIEGO AREA: June 23 – 27 (middle school and high school)
FT LAUDERDALE AREA: July 21-25 (middle school only)
No previous experience in video is required. The cost starts at $300 for the one-week session for middle school students and goes to $900 for the high school program in San Diego.
Students who attend will learn about video production, planning and executing a story, writing copy, speaking on camera and using equipment. Students will experiment with the creation of a feature news story, a public service announcement, a commercial, a music video and a movie trailer. Students will serve in various production roles and will be taught leadership skills and responsibility while learning to work together as a team to complete a common goal.
“In addition to real world skills for video, television and film, this academy will give students tremendous confidence in speaking, writing and performance.” said Nancy Held Loucas, Program Director for Student Television Network. “These are all 21st Century Skills that kids need to be successful.”
The Academy Director is Paul Kass, an STN Board Member and teacher at Placerita Jr High. In addition to his normal teaching assignment, he organizes the video production/broadcast journalism club for the school and helps the students produce a live daily morning news show. Paul has been involved with STN since 2004. The Ft. Lauderdale program will be directed by Beth Kennedy, the Educational Technologist and TV/Film Productions Teacher at Pine Crest School and also the STN South Region Board Member.
Student Television Network (a 501C3 non-profit organization) embraces the educational components of broadcast journalism, video production, filmmaking and media convergence by networking students and teachers with professionals in the industry. Middle school and high school students are given varied opportunities for training, interaction, competition and critiques from qualified experts.
