1929 - Swift justice: Thomas Vernon sentenced to life in prison for Saugus train derailment & robbery 1 month earlier [story]

Six Flags Magic Mountain officials say Twisted Colossus is on track for its spring opening complete with a new revamped steampunk area.

“I’d say about 40 percent (of the coaster is complete),” said Six Flags Magic Mountain Construction Manager Bruce Thompson. “We’ve got to complete the track, put the lift chain in, all the drive motors. All that stuff is arriving now.”

There is not an exact date set yet, Magic Mountain officials announced Monday that Twisted Colossus is on schedule to open in spring if inclement weather stays at bay, Spokeswoman Sue Carpenter said.

“It’s pretty much a normal coaster project,” Thompson said. “We’ll do two-thirds of the project in one-third of the time.”

More than half of the wood from the original Colossus is being used in Twisted Colossus, Carpenter said.

Six Flags Magic Mountain On Track For Twisted Colossus Spring OpThe coaster will have four trains, each with six cars, Carpenter said. A total of 24 people can ride in each trains and three trains can be running at once.

One train will be set aside for rehabilitation, Thompson said. Each train will be a different color — orange, purple, blue and green.

In addition to revamping Colossus, Magic Mountain officials are turning the whole area into the Steampunk District.

“It’s where wood meets steel,” said Debbie Erickson, director of marketing. “which has kind of been our theme.”

Scream! is getting a new paint job, while Magic Moments Theater will be transformed into Gearworks Theater and one building will be turned into Twisted ‘Wiches, a gourmet sandwich shop.

Scream! is being hand-painted orange and blue.

The design for the portal, similar to the one leading into DC Universe, is still in the works.

More than 50 people are working on the whole project, Carpenter said. More than half of those are with the Rocky Mountain Construction, who are building Twisted Colossus.

The original Colossus wooden coaster opened June 29, 1978 and was closed Aug. 17 of last year.

Magic Mountain officials plan to release more updates on the status of the completion of the ride, Carpenter said.
