Wednesday night saw the quarter-finals of the Valley Invitational Baseball League (VIBL), and the two teams remaining from Santa Clarita – the Saugus Centurions and the Valencia Vikings – are BOTH headed to the semifinals.
The Centurions got 4 2/3 innings from knuckleballer Luke Hovey, who allowed just one earned run against the No. 2 seeded Harvard-Westlake Wolverines.
The Vikings got home runs from both A.J. Balta and Keston Hiura, as well as a complete game from pitcher Holden Mehr, in Valencia’s shut out win over Woodland Hills.
So in the semi-finals to be played Friday night, Saugus is home against Loyola while Valencia travels to play No. 1 seed Valley North.
The winner of those games will play for the VIBL Championship Saturday night at Birmingham High School.
Golden Valley baseball chose not to participate in the VIBL this year, instead opting to play American Legion summer ball. The Grizzlies have advanced to the four-team, double elimination playoff tournament to be held at UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Grizzlies play Santa Monica Friday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
