[KHTS] – California weather reports are showing evidence of rain due to an El Niño event this winter and continuing through the spring of 2016.

The National Weather Service reports that “there is a greater than 90 percent chance that an El Niño will continue through the Northern Hemisphere during this winter and around an 80 percent chance that it will last into early spring 2016.”

Scott Sukup, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service said that it is hard to pin down an exact location of where the El Nino could occur, but there is a high possibility of a significant amount of rain in the Southern California area.

“The Climate Prediction Center, which is part of the (NWS), is saying that the El Niño will be stronger in the winter and continue to spring 2016,” said Sukup.

It is too early now to say what the effect of the El Nino will have on the drought, particularly in the Santa Clarita Valley, Sukup said.

“The rain we know of now, will help with the drought but we would need more than one year above normal rainfall to cause an effect with the drought,” said Sukup.

Across the contiguous United States, temperature and precipitation impacts associated with an El Niño are expected to remain minimal during the Northern Hemisphere summer and increase into the late fall and winter, 2015-16, according to the Climate Prediction Center, National Weather Service. El Niño will likely contribute to a below normal Atlantic hurricane season, and to above-normal hurricane seasons in both the central and eastern Pacific hurricane basins.

Visit the National Weather Service’s website for more information about weather patterns in Southern California.
