Here’s what the city of Santa Clarita is doing:
Street Maintenance:
Street Maintenance staff will be on standby Friday night to respond to calls. Staff will be monitoring the progress of the storm and if the situation warrants it, we will bring in staff resources.
Early Friday morning, plans called for staff to inspect all major streets and arterials as well as locations that have already been identified as problem areas during rainy seasons such as Placerita Canyon, Calla Lilly, Sierra Highway near Beales’ Cut, Soledad Canyon Road. Road inspection and pothole maintenance will be conducted throughout the day on Friday.
Three debris plows have been installed onto vehicles to clean debris from roads; 120 sandbags have been prefilled; 1,000 sand bags are available along with four tons of sand; and portable signs have been fabricated to inform the public of sidewalk closures and flooding issue.
Facilities:
Friday at Newhall Park
Facilities staff is checking all City buildings including their roof areas, to remove debris that could clog downspouts and roof drains, including a cursory walk for any other issues and securing roof hatches. They are gathering needed tools including flashlights and wet-dry vacuums to make sure they are operating correctly.
They addressed any known locations before they could be impacted including fortifying the entry doors at the Canyon Country Community Center and checking the sump pump in the subterranean delivery dock at the Valencia Library. Staff is also making sure carpet mats are available to place at the entry points at City Hall and other locations. Staff will be gathering their inclement weather gear and boots and making sure their vehicles are fueled and ready to go. During the storm, staff will be required to take samples of drainage water for storm water permits.
Fleet:
The City’s Fleet staff is also planning for the inclement weather by taking inventory of vehicle wiper blades; coordinating the installation of the Street Division mud and debris blades, so mechanics can address any last minute repairs before the storm hits; topping off the fuel cells, checking stock, tools and supplies stored on the Fleets emergency road service truck; and gathering their inclement weather gear and boots.
Storm Water staff:
As part of their regular duties throughout the year, Storm Water staff has been utilizing Vactor trucks and other equipment to clean hundreds of storm-drains, catch basins, outfalls, retention basins and channels owned by the City. Storm Water Staff will also be on hand to place signage in problem areas to warn motorists, and will be on hand to remedy any issues that may arise.
