[KHTS] – After Santa Clarita City Council members voted to approve a contract and funds for the Golden Valley Road bridge-widening project in Canyon Country, officials are now moving forward with the project.
City Council officials recently awarded a $7 million contract to Security Paving Company, Inc. for construction on the bridge, said city of Santa Clarita Senior Engineer Harry Corder. The budget for the whole project is estimated to be $11 million.
This is the top project for Canyon Country this year,” City Spokeswoman Gail Morgan said, in a previous interview. “It’ll be huge. A lot of people use that offramp to Highway 14, the shopping center, Golden Valley High.”
The ribbon cutting ceremony for the project is expected to be held Wednesday, March 18 at 2 p.m. at the Golden Valley Road Bridge over the 14 freeway.
The city is also paying the California Highway Patrol $100,000 to have officers on scene during night construction, he said. This is available under the Construction Zone Enhanced Enforcement Program.
City officials hope to start the Golden Valley Road bridge-widening project in the beginning of April, Corder said.
The project is expected to take between 14-15 months and is planned to be completed in summer 2016, he said.
The Golden Valley Road bridge over SR-14 was built in 1973 and retrofitted for earthquakes in 1998, according to the City Council agenda.
The new improvements will widen the bridge by 112 feet with two lanes in each direction, two left-turn lanes for the northbound SR-14 and on left-turn lane for the southbound SR-14, officials said. The improvements include a pedestrian sidewalk and bicycle trail.
The park-and-ride near the bridge will also be expanded.
City officials are warning residents of traffic delays that will be caused by the bridge widening, officials said. The only lane closures and detours expected with this project is on SR-14. Lane closures will occur both day and night.
“On behalf of the city of Santa Clarita, we are absolutely thrilled to be underway with this major project that will benefit Canyon Country and the entire city,” said Mayor Marsha McLean, in a previous interview.

Good project!
I’m just wondering when there going to build another road out of our valley . so when tragedy strikes again we’re not trapped here like when the 94′ earthquake happened .
Any ideas on where that road might go or come from? The 126 through Fillmore and / or Grimes Canyon is an alternate route, You can take off North on the I-5 and escape to Kern county should you feel the need, and the AV-14 leads to a couple of back routes through the mountains. So unless you helicopter yourself out of the SCV, I don’t know of any other possible routes. We can only hope that all the retro-fitting that was done to that interchange will hold up when the “Big One” hits. (the use of the word “you” was not directly geared towards anyone in particular…it was used to represent all of us). This widening to GVB though is going to be a good thing. Have a nice day everyone.
Common city workers one works three stand and watch.
It appears that everyone is “standing” around…paying attention & listening to the one talking. Sort of hard to work when the article says the project doesn’t even start until April.
