It has been a week of mostly downs for the Golden Valley girls basketball team. And Friday night was not much better as the Grizzlies lost to West Ranch 60-43 in Foothill League basketball.
The game was televised by SCVTV.
After losing to Valencia this past Tuesday to open Foothill League play, head coach Daniel Veluzat resigned. Golden Valley Athletic Director Robert Fisher stepped in to fill the void, handling practices in preparation for Friday’s game.
Scott Sivley: Taking Over as Head Coach
Prior to the game Friday against West Ranch, Fisher announced Scott Sivley, a former assistant under Veluzat, as the head coach for the remainder of the season.
West Ranch built a 20-point lead midway through the third quarter. But a full-court pressure defense by the Grizzlies forced Wildcat turnovers and Golden Valley was able to close the gap to within eight.
The Wildcats, however, pulled away through the fourth when the Grizzlies seemed to run out of gas to stay undefeated in Foothill League play.
A frightening moment came in the fourth quarter when West Ranch senior guard Michelle Arima fell awkwardly to the floor. She had to be carried off.
The Wildcats were led by Whitney Branham with 29 points. The 5-foot-5 sophomore hit five 3-pointers and was 10-of-13 from the free throw line.
Theresa Ohaya led Golden Valley with 13.
