Twenty-one outstanding community volunteers have been nominated by local nonprofit organizations to be honored at the annual Women in Service Celebration sponsored by Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley.
This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, March 16, at The Oaks (formerly TPC Valencia). Ticket sales have closed for the sold-out celebration, but nominees themselves are guests of Zonta at the event.
This year’s nominees, and the organization which nominated each of them, include: Deborah McInstash, AAUW (formerly American Association of University Women); Teresa Kerr, American Cancer Society; Linda Likins, Assistance League; Sabina Fetter, Blue Star Mothers; Kelsey Ridnor, SCV Boys’ and Girls’ Club.
Also, Judith Adams, Bridge to Home; Jean LaCorte, Child and Family Center; Holly Feneht, Circle of Hope; Olga Zapata, Family Promise; Gina Stevens, Fostering Youth Independence; Deva Metz, Henry Mayo Auxiliary; Andrea Standley, Henry Mayo Foundation; Tami Reyna, Henry Mayo Home Tour.
Also, Peggy Stabile, Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays; Dee Gadbury, Samuel Dixon Health Center; Mary Jane Hartman, SCV Senior Center; Dorothy Smith, Single Mothers Outreach, Karen Schnurr, Soroptimist of Greater Santa Clarita Valley; Stephanie Sewell, Soroptimist International of Valencia; Dana Bradford, Straightening Reins; and Lisa Eichman, WISH Foundation.
The March 16 event includes a buffet brunch, prize drawings, a marketplace featuring vendors whose merchandise supports women’s causes, and presentation of all 21 nominees and their nominating organizations. At the end of the program, one of the honorees will be named the 2019 Carmen Sarro Community Service Award winner, representing outstanding service to her organization, to the community as a whole, and to Zonta’s goal of improving the lives of women and girls.
The award is named for Carmen Sarro, a longtime Zonta member whose wide range of community service epitomized the well-rounded community volunteer. Her daughter, Christine Sexton, a second generation Zonta member, will make the presentation in honor of her late mother.
Further information can be obtained on the Zonta website at http://www.scvzonta.org/women-in-service. Doors open for early check-in and seating at 9:30 a.m., with the program to begin promptly at 10 a.m. The National Anthem will be sung by Canyon High School graduate Elisha Soronio, whose vocal prowess thrilled guests at last year’s Women in Service Celebration. She will be accompanied on guitar by her brother Marco, from the Canyon High Music Department.
