The College of the Canyons Art Gallery, in collaboration with the Getty Museum, launched its first exhibit of the 2011-12 school year Aug. 23: an eight-student photo journalism showcase named “Engaged Observers: Student Perspectives.”
Featuring photographs from COC students, the exhibit is a “project undertaken by the Education Department of the J. Paul Getty Museum … at four Southern California colleges: College of the Canyons, East Los Angeles College, Pierce College, and Santa Monica College,” according to the gallery’s website.
The students spent their summer semester studying the “Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography since the Sixties” exhibit at the Getty, which runs through November. Also, during the semester, the students took a class taught by photojournalist Sudharak Olwe.
Based out of Mumbai, India, Olwe is an accomplished photojournalist with over 20 years of experience. In 2001 Olwe was the only Indian photographer included in the World Press Photo Exhibition in Amsterdam. Four years later, he received the All Roads Photographers Award from National Geographic.
Over a two-week course, Olwe shared his work with the students, along with taking them out to Los Angeles to conduct photography exercises. Olwe also critiqued the work of each student based on their school theme of choice for the course. COC’s chosen theme was “conflict.”
An online collection of the students work can be seen on the Getty website: http://www.getty.edu/education/college/olwe/index.html
