A 15- to 17-year-old boy is in custody after leading Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s deputies on a chase through a neighborhood in West Newhall.
The juvenile, known by name to deputies – and to SCVNews.com, which is withholding his name because of his age – was wanted in connection with a strongarm robbery that occurred one week ago.
Lt. Bill Weiss of the SCV Sheriff’s Station said the robbery was committed on a Newhall street and involved taking a victim’s personal property, possibly a cell phone.
A deputy spotted the suspect Friday at about 4 p.m. and the he ran away, hopping through back yards in the vicinity of his own home in the 24700 block of Chestnut Street.
Deputies set up a containment zone, shutting off nearby streets until they captured him at gunpoint about a half-hour later on Newhall Avenue behind his home. Deputies went through his house to make sure there were no more threats, and confirmed he was in custody at about 4:50 p.m.
Weiss said it was not immediately clear whether the suspect is 15 or 17. He was described as a Hispanic male, 120 to 130 pounds, approximately 5-foot-8 in height.
