“The Wolverine,” starring Hugh Jackman and directed by CalArts grad James Mangold, has grossed more than $250 million internationally after its second weekend in theaters, more than doubling its $120 million production cost.
Shot in Australia and Japan, the Twentieth Century Fox release opened worldwide July 24-26 (July 26 in the U.S.) and grossed $141.1 million over its first weekend.
As of Sunday, Aug. 4, it had raked in $253.6 million – including $94.6 million in the U.S. (37.3 percent) and $159 million at foreign box offices (62.7 percent).
Mangold (“Girl, Interrupted,” “3:10 to Yuma”) graduated in 1985 with a bachelor of fine arts degree in film and video from California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, where his student film, “Barn,” was about a barn that came to life and swallowed a boy. Mangold, 49, also studied film at Columbia University.
