The city of Santa Clarita will begin construction on the Newhall Ranch Road Bridge Widening Project Tuesday at 9 p.m.
The project will improve traffic flow and construct a new pedestrian walkway, bike path and trail connections at the Newhall Ranch Road Bridge located over San Francisquito Creek.
The first phase of the construction includes modifications of the traffic signal at Newhall Ranch Road and Avenue Tibbitts and widening of the bridge along the south side. Crews will begin working tonight through Thursday, between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., to add new traffic signs, restripe lanes and begin demolition work on the south side of the bridge. Construction on the traffic signal and bridge will take place on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. During construction, both directions of the bridge will remain open to traffic.
The $16 million dollar project will widen the bridge to provide an additional traffic lane in each direction – increasing the number of lanes in each direction to four. The project will also add a raised median, construct a new protected sidewalk and bike path on the south side of the bridge and add new trail connections along the west bank under Newhall Ranch Road. The project is expected to be completed by October 2018.

What benefit does this provide? I’ve never had an issue with traffic at this intersection more so than the others in town?
Will this alleviate the traffic on the 14fwy? That seems to be a bigger issue.
It’s their futile attempt to accommodate 300,000 more people in this valley.
The freeways are maintained by Caltrans – the State, not Santa Clarita!

What’s wrong with y’all. This is a very worthy project. Asking if it will relieve traffic on the 14 is a bit crazy. Of course it won’t. This will tie the road and bike paths to the trail system and create a separation between pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. Kudos to the city on this!
There s never congestion here, j/s. Maybe invest funds for 5pm rush hour bouquet and Valencia?

Excited to finally get the paseo pathway connected instead of crossing over the road, but October 2018 is so far away!
The 5n and 14 split needs to be fixed clogged every day there !!!?

Why don’t they spend our tax paying dollars fixing our streets and the freeway pot holes.Widening this bridge is no benefit to us..There are bigger issues..
As a SCV resident who commutes along this corridor from home to work & back several time a week, this will be welcome relief to what I see as a bottleneck at rush hour. I also love the fix on the connection to the bike trails, as I enjoy the occasional ride through this part of the trail system & have felt that I was taking my life in my hands riding through here. GREAT use of taxes for a change!
In case y’all haven’t noticed, roads in this valley are considered bikeways. The only reason this bridge would require widening is if there are traffic issues (i.e. logjams) or if it lacks other means of crossing the creek bed. So guess which one it is?
Yup. Bikes ‘n Hikes. For the life of me I can’t imagine wanting to walk across the creek bed and not be IN the creek bed. There’s way more to see, touch and enjoy if you are down in the sand seeing the local flora and fauna and wandering around.
Of course if you are on a bike and are traveling to work, or just riding around then the lack of dedicated bike safety lanes would be a big deal.
Ergo, the bridge needs to be widened.
Capisce? And remember to give those tightly-wrapped riders their government allotted 3 feet.
I’ve seen several homeless people around. I was having a conversation with a couple of them who heard about the project. They mentioned they would be able to set up their tents on the new paths hidden away from public view. It’ll soon be like downtown L.A. once the word gets around. Way to go on this project ?
I think we all wish the tax money would fix every single road in town! How they choose which road(s) is always a mystery! Each county/city has a budget. They vote on priority and need. I’ve never understood the path they select. All I can hope for is that one day, some day they’ll get around to my personal choices.

Well, it could be. Depends on if it increases traffic problems, doesn’t it? If it’s big enough for clear bike lanes that don’t interfere with vehicular traffic I will agree. If we end up with a bridge paseo that has multiple bike lanes and walkways but no extra space for cars and trucks, well then only the bikers will be happy. As I said before, the hikers can always walk in the creek bed. And they should.
Those on wheels can’t do that.
