In light of two resignations, the Castaic Area Town Council is looking to hold a special election in July, according to Town Council President Flo Lawrence.

Michelle Zepp-Carrillo and Jim McGrory both tendered their resignations within about a month of each other in March and April, respectively.

The council must wait 90 days before acting to fill the seats, Lawrence said, according to council bylaws.

The two seats available are Region 1 and Region 5, according to a notice put out by the council.

Region 1 includes the communities of Live Oak, North Bluffs, Hillcrest Park, Hasley Hills and the Valencia Commerce Center.

Region 5 includes Double C Ranch, Hidden Lake, Stonegate, NorthLake, Castaic east of I5 and north of Lake Hughes Road.

The $50 filing fee for the seat was declared in May, but there has been an issue drumming up interest in the spots, Lawrence said.

“We are eagerly searching for two active community members who want to serve,” Lawrence said, adding that no one has filed for the seat, yet.

“We haven’t heard whisper one, Lawrence said.

Both seats would be occupied until the winning candidate in the November 2014 election is sworn in January of 2015, Lawrence said.

The town council members are essentially elected volunteers who advise Los Angeles County on the local interests of Castaic, which is an unincorporated part of the county, Lawrence said.

The council also organizes community events such as April’s Castaic Lake 5k/10-mile dam race.

Rosalind Wayman, field deputy for Fifth District Supervisor Michael Antonovich, is a regular fixture at council’s meetings, which take place on the third Wednesday of each month in the Castaic Union School District’s boardroom.

The school district’s office is located 28131 Livingston Ave. in the Valencia Commerce Center.

The council set a July 13 deadline for the seat and has tentatively planned to hold a special election July 20.

That date may be subject to change, Lawrence said.
