If someone knocks on your door asking you to buy a subscription to College of the Canyons’ student newspaper, call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at 661-255-1121.
Why? Because College of the Canyons doesn’t have a student newspaper.
COC spokesman Bruce Battle said the scammers are back. Several times in recent years, persons purporting to be college students have gone door-to-door to solicit donations or subscriptions in COC’s name.
“Residents should be acutely aware that this is a con and that they should notify local law enforcement if anyone comes to their doors asking for donations on behalf of the college,” Battle said Wednesday.
He said the college is once again getting calls from residents.
“Variations of this same scam happen from time to time, with people who have posed as students and asked for money for various college projects or activities – none of which are real,” Battle said.
“College of the Canyons does not ask its students to go door-to-door to solicit monetary donations for any reason,” he said. “In all likelihood, the people who are engaged in this con are taking advantage of the strong reputation that COC has in the community and we only hope that no one falls victim to this scam.”
“Needless to say, the college doesn’t appreciate having its good reputation sullied in this manner,” he said.
Battle said potential victims can help by asking for the solicitor’s identification, getting good descriptions and reporting them immediately to the sheriffs station.
