Abbey Weitzeil, swimming for the Canyons Aquatics Club, won a Speedo Junior National championship in the 50-meter freestyle in Irvine.
She won the race in 25.27 seconds and nearly broke the meet record set by Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin.
Weitzeil, who will be a junior at Saugus High, qualified for the FINA World Championships in the 50-meter freestyle in Dubai at the end of the month. Weitzeil also is eligible to compete on the US Women’s junior national 4×100 freestyle relay team.
Hart’s Cole Cogswell, swimming for the Canyons Aquatics Club, was 20th in the 50 freestyle in 23.75 seconds.
Hart’s Matt Johnson, also swimming for Canyons Aquatics Club, was 93rd in the 800-meter freestyle in 8 minutes, 36.60 seconds.
In volleyball, the Valencia girls won the silver division championship, 2-0, over Oxnard at the So Cal Summer Challenge at Cal Lutheran University.
In golf, Valencia High graduate Alison Lee fell to Emma Talley in the semifinals of the US Women’s Amateur golf championship in South Carolina.
Lee lost the match on the 17th hole. After knotting up the match by winning three holes in a row, the 14th, 15th and 16th, Lee lost the 17th hole and Talley won the match, 1 up.
Talley went on to win the US Women’s Amateur Championship.
In auto racing, Jim Pettit won the NASCAR Pro Late Model race at Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield.
Kevin Thompson, the leader in the Pro Late Model standings at the track, was fourth.
In baseball, the Dodgers beat the visiting Tampa Bay Rays, 8-2, and completed the four-game series sweep.
Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw gave up two run on three hits and won his 11th game of the season.
The Dodgers have won five games in a row and nine of their last 10.
The Mets are in town to start a three-game series at the Ravine tonight.
