So, in other words. The owners of the land won’t sell it . The end result is that the government will just take it and call it eminent domain ? ,
Here’s a response to the “detailed” story at KHTS:
The wheels of government turn exceedingly slow, but they grind exceedingly coarse. That’s just a minor variation on the historic comment. This hillside slope/landslide/sedimentary slump is not new. Without difficulty it is possible to find stories/evidence that it has happened at least 2 times prior to the current event. A cursory inspection of the location clearly shows that this event will continue to occur unless slope control is performed. That means reshaping the entire hillside for several hundred yards east of the recent occurrence.
LA County could have fixed it in 1969, but for no doubt important reasons at the time they did not.
A first/second year geology student could explain the risk given a little time to examine the site and conduct stratigraphic mapping and analysis.
Eminent domain proceedings would allow the county to take control of enough of the current private property to greatly reduce the chance of this happening again. If they do it right. And if the county is able to grind through the courts to gain control.
Either way, don’t plan on traversing Vasquez Canyon Road for at least the next 5 years. Unless of course the new 5th District County Supervisor (Prince or Princess of North LA County) decides to give it a big push. Vote early, and vote often!
