Sheriff Jim McDonnell and family members of slain L.A. County Sheriff’s Deputy Shayne Daniel York (E.O.W. Aug. 16, 1997) will participate in the dedication of memorial signage on a section of Interstate 5 in Castaic in the deputy’s honor. The dedication ceremony will be held in the Shayne York Memorial Garden at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center.
Background:
On Aug. 14, 1997, Deputy York and his fiancée, who was also a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, were off duty in a hair salon when two armed gang members entered a Buena Park beauty shop that evening to rob it. The two suspects discovered Deputy York’s badge and immediately shot him in the back of the head as he lay on the ground.
With the careful investigation, keen eyes, cooperation, and high professional standards of the Buena Park and Fullerton Police Departments, the suspects were caught and brought to justice.
Deputy Shayne York fought two days for his life, and succumbed to his fatal injury on Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997. He was 26 years old.
Almost 19 years to the day, Sheriff Jim McDonnell and Mr. Dan York, father of slain Deputy Shayne York, will unveil a Memorial Highway sign dedicating the stretch of Interstate Highway 5 between Newhall Ranch Road and Hasley Canyon Road, as the Shayne York Memorial Highway.
