On Friday, August 18th, 2017, the California Highway Patrol Newhall Area Office will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in the unincorporated area of Los Angeles County. The checkpoint will begin at approximately 6:30 pm and conclude at approximately 2:30 am Saturday, August 19th, 2017.
The location will be announced just prior to the operation. Motorists approaching the checkpoint will see informational signs advising them of a sobriety checkpoint ahead. Once diverted into the lane, motorists will be detained only momentarily while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint.
The goal of the D.U.I. Checkpoint is to create awareness among the motoring public, to deter people from driving under the influence, and to keep the streets safe for all. Although checkpoints tend to reduce the number of drinking drivers on the road, the C.H.P. will apprehend D.U.I. drivers who fail to heed our warnings. Even though arrest totals do not rise dramatically, the psychological influence a checkpoint has on the motoring public is invaluable.
Sobriety checkpoints are conducted in accordance to the guidelines for checkpoint operations outlined in the Supreme Court decision, Ingersol vs. Palmer. Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles will be checked. If traffic volume becomes too heavy, vehicles to be checked will be selected by a pre-set standard, such as every 5th or 10th vehicle, in order to assure objectivity.
For further information, please feel free to contact California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Josh Greengard at (661) 294-5540.

How stupid to announce this. Now the drunks will find their way around it…
Or tip off their drunk friends??? What good are they anymore?
They legally have to announce it, they just don’t have to specify the location.
Find a short cut through Awesome town and take out a parent???
If you read the article they don’t mention where it’s going to be. Can’t dodge it if you don’t know where it is.
Josh Larson I know they did not say where, it’s the idea they even said anything about it. Catch them by surprise. duh
I don’t see how it’s any less of a surprise. Also there’s this legal thing called entrapment. This is how you avoid that.
They’re DRUNK!!! they won’t remember!
Really

It says the checkpoint location will be announced prior to it starting. Why tell them where it’s at?
It’s revealed at the same speed that the first texter sees it and posts it on Facebook. Sometimes the FB poster is faster.
Uber much?
I feel that these shouldn’t be announced
That’s fine you feel that way but the sheriff is required by law to announce the check points and this is one of the ways they comply.
That’s what I was thinking!
Shane Weeks but SCV TV is not the sheriff
But they need to report it and it is a good local news outlet.
SCVTV Santa Clarita if you really care about the safety of your viewers, you will take this down.
I believe the point is, to remind people to think about what they’re doing when they are out.
These should not be announced and especially where. Idc if it is my son that was to get thrown in jail for a DUI he deserves it. He does not drink and drive he is on a deployment right now but when he does he is very responsible.
Research has shown that the threat of a pending DUI checkpoint decreases drunk driving while the actual DUI checkpoint usually nabs people driving without a valid license. Only rarely do they catch DUI’s this way.
Seriously people? It is a legal requirement for them to announce these, as well as providing a way for people to avoid them (a street they can turn down to avoid getting in the queue). And the locations are not announced before the checkpoint night so that people can’t spread the word and completely avoid the area. I have no problem with the announcement or the checkpoint themselves (yes, I have been through several) and I believe they are time and money well spent even if just one drunk driver is taken off the road.
I take it you never had a person die in front of you. A person that got killed by a drunk driver that avoided a check point cuz it was posted on Facebook. Well I have. And no it does not to be all over social media for drinks to see !!!!
Again, I agree with you that a gotcha checkpoint would be the most effective, but 1) the courts have decreed that they be publicized, 2) the courts require an “out” if someone want to avoid one and 3) in today’s world of social media, the location is online within minutes of setup. And yes, I have seen more than one person die in front of me. It’s horrible. I’m all for death penalty for drunk drivers.
And one more thing – they have been publicizing the checkpoints for at least seven or eight years – why is this a new issue to you people?
But really, let’s be honest it’s all about trying to catch as many other little infractions as possible to make some money
I’ve said it before and the our sheriff has admitted that saturation patrols are far more effective in nabbing drunk drivers. The honest truth is that these check points are to get motor violations like tail lights and drivers licenses. If you don’t believe me just look at the reports of the results from prior check points. As for the sheriff admitting just look at their statement after the last saturation patrol.

Can they stop drunk texting too? “Sorry sir, gonna have to change your eBay password until you sober up.”
Should be on every major street in Santa Clarita
I don’t think these should be announced.
I agree
Why use a photo of a sign that looks bloody ? SMH
Tag a drunk friend that might be driving that night
Shocker??
Did they have to pick a sigh that looks like it’s covered in blood. …?
THANK YOU! That has always been my thought too!
“Warning, Will Robinson !”
So now all the drinks know not to go that way. Now they go a different route and kill an innocent persons. ?
Why not just tell all the bad guys where the seal team is hiding at. Wow.
Laura Winston, see what I’m sayin? Lol
Yes ma’am I do!!! Lol

DUI Checkpoints vs. DUI Patrols – two different tactics with two different expected outcomes.
Checkpoints are highly visible, highly publicized events meant to deter drinking and driving in the first place. Checkpoints have been shown to have the potential to lower DUI fatality rates by up to 20 percent by virtue of their deterrence. People go through them, drive past them, hear about them via multiple grapevines and get the ongoing impression that drunk driving is dangerous, socially unacceptable, and that law enforcement is actively looking for it.
Patrols are meant to catch active drunks, get them off the streets and prosecute them. Patrols have little deterrent value, but high enforcement value. They are both good tactics and both should be in the arsenal of DUI combating tactics, along with others. In terms of catching drunks, nothing beats patrols. In terms of saving lives, nothing beats checkpoints.
What is the point of posting this????? To warn the drunk drivers to take another route!? I don’t understand this logic ?
