CSUN GolfA final round 300 dropped the CSUN women’s golf team to third place at the conclusion of the Battle at Old Works Tuesday at Old Works Golf Club.

The Matadors (888), who sat second after rounds of 291-299 on Monday, were overtaken in the final round by Cal State Fullerton (887) who grabbed second place by a single stroke. North Dakota State (878) led from start to finish to grab team champion honors while Montana’s Baylee Barckley claimed individual medalist honors at two-under 214.

CSUN’s first round 291 on Monday is the teams’ lowest since carding a 285 at the Birdies for Breast Cancer tournament in 2013.

“Our goal was to pick up where we left off last April and we accomplished that goal,” said CSUN head coach Gina Umeck. “Our goal after this tournament is to improve on the next. We are adding really positive aspects to our mental game each day.”

Sophomore Alice Duan posted the first top 10 finish of her collegiate career as she fired a final round two-over 74 to tie for sixth in the 46-player field. Duan had 14 pars in the final round and overcame three bogeys with a birdie on the 18th hole to get back to two-over for the day and three-over 219 for the tournament.

Junior Kayla Yn finished one shot behind Duan after a final round one-over 73 left her tied for eighth at four-over 220. Yn played virtually error-free golf on Tuesday, carding 17 pars and a single bogey five at No. 18. By adding 17 pars in the final round, Yn led all players in the field with 43 pars. Her eighth place finish was her best in six tournaments as a Matador.

Senior Shenna DeLeon made it three CSUN golfers in the top 20 as she finished with a final round six-over 78 to tie for 15th at nine-over 225. DeLeon wound up carding rounds of 72-75-78.

Sophomore Michelle Duan narrowly missed the top 20 in her first tournament as a Matador as she closed with a three-over 75 to finish in a tie for 22nd at 11-over 227. Fellow newcomer Brooke Hamilton posted an eight-over 80 in the final round to finish 30th in her CSUN debut at 17-over 233.

The Matadors will be off from tournament play until the end of the month when they head to Palm Springs for the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club (Sept. 30-Oct. 1).
