Qualifying students enrolled in the Career Online High School (COHS) program offered by LA County Library can now check out a laptop and MiFi mobile internet hotspot for free. The Library is offering these checkouts in an effort to remove potential barriers to the program for those who do not have access to a computer or internet at home, but wish to earn their accredited diploma and career certificate.
COHS is a free, online high school diploma program for adults 19 and over. In addition to earning an accredited diploma in 18 months or less, students also earn a career certificate in one of eight high-demand fields, including office management, food service, childcare and education, and more.
LA County Library offers free seats in the program to adults who meet the requirements. COHS students who do not have a computer at home are now eligible to receive a laptop to use for the duration of the program, after they have finished their pre-requisite coursework, which can be completed via an in-library computer.
The COHS program was made possible through LA County Library’s partnership with the database provider Gale/Cengage, as well as the Clinton Global Initiative and California State Library. LA County Library is one of 39 libraries within the state of California that offers free COHS scholarships. It is ranked second in the state.
