The city of Santa Clarita received applications from eight local residents for an open position available on the city’s Planning Commission, and the City Council will make its choice during its meeting at City Hall Tuesday night.

The position opened following the resignation of Charles Heffernan in January.

The applicants to replace him are Corey Alan Carter, Sarah Darabi, John Lewis Dortch, Dr. Mark Elfont, Jason Warren Gibbs, Philip M. Hart, Dan Masnada and Gary L. Morrison.

At the City Council’s meeting at City Hall Tuesday night, Councilman Bob Kellar will submit the name of his nominee for the position (Kellar nominated Hefferman and will also nominate the replacement).

The Council will then vote to choose the new commissioner, who will fill out the balance of Heffernan’s four-year term, which will expire on December 31, 2020.

The five-member Planning Commission advises the City Council on major development projects, property acquisition, specific plans zoning and other planning matters, and meets at City Hall on the first and third Tuesday of the month.

The current Planning Commission lineup is Lisa Eichman, chairperson; Renee Berlin, vice chairperson; and Commissioners Dr. Dennis Ostrom and Tim Burkhart.

Applicants for the open position had to be 18 years or older and must maintain their principal residence in the city of Santa Clarita during their term of office. Applicants were required to submit three letters of recommendation with their application by April 6.

Kellar then convened a panel of local residents, community leaders and city staff to interview the applicants and make a recommendation for filling the vacancy.
