1955 - U.S. release of "Gunsmoke" TV series, initially filmed at Melody Ranch [story]
James Arness

Spend your final days of summer laughing, listening to music and challenging your brain at one of the many August shows at The MAIN in Old Town Newhall.

Tickets are on sale now for a variety of theatre, comedy and music shows. Adult beverages will also be available for purchase at select shows, in addition to concessions.

The 10 by 10 Variety Night occurs on the first Thursday of the month and features music, film, storytelling, magic, comedy and more. Ten performers, from a variety of genres, are selected to perform a 10-minute piece of their choosing. Don’t miss a 10 by 10 newbie, magician Chris Lopez, who has won seven international magic awards and has headlined shows across the United States, Canada and Italy. The show is on Thursday, August 1 at 7:00 p.m. and is free to attend.

Comedy Mashup returns to The MAIN on Friday, August 2 at 8:00 p.m. This monthly show is half stand-up comedy and half improv, featuring comedians and improvisers from all over Los Angeles. Headlining this month is Lila Hart, who has her own talk show “Small Talk Live with Lila Hart,” and has performed at The Comedy Show and on the Kill Tony podcast. Nolan Culver returns as our summer host and “Your Favorite Cast” rounds out the evening with hilarious improv. Tickets are $10 presale and $15 on the day of the show.

The Society Comedy Troupe is bringing a hilarious and energetic team improv show to The MAIN on Saturday, August 3 at 8:00 p.m. Similar to the TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” the performers ask for audience participation while creating improvised music, comedy and scenes. Grab your friends for an evening of laughs at this show that’s appropriate for all ages. Tickets are $15.

Two theatre productions grace The MAIN’s stage for August shows: “Painted Churches,” presented by Crow’s Nest Productions, and “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind (30 Plays in 60 Minutes),” presented by The Old Mask Era.

Tina Howe’s “Painting Churches” was a finalist for the 1984 Pulitzer Prize in Drama and the basis for the 1994 film “The Portrait,” starring Gregory Peck and Lauren Bacall. The play follows Gardner and Fanny Church as they prepare to move out of their Beacon Hill house to their summer cottage on Cape Cod. Gardner, once a famous poet and Pulitzer Prize winner, now is retired, slipping in and out of senility as his wife Fanny valiantly tries to keep them both afloat. They have asked their daughter, Margaret, who they call Mags, to come home and help them move. Mags agrees for she hopes to finally paint their portrait. She is now on the verge of artistic celebrity herself and hopes, by painting her parents, to come to terms with them — and them with her. Performances occur on August 9, 10, 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. and August 11 and 18 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $18 for students and seniors.

A late-night interactive phenomenon for 30 years, Greg Allen’s “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind” was the longest-running show in Chicago history. This ensemble experiment in presenting “30 Plays in 60 Minutes” has also surprised audiences for years in New York and San Francisco. Our intrepid Neo-Futurists race a 60-minute timer to perform each two-minute play in random order, based on the spontaneous whims of the audience. Themes range from comic, tragic and political to even personal or abstract. Performances occur on August 9, 10 and 17 at 10:30 p.m. and August 14 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12.

Note by Note is a free music night delighting audiences with a variety of genres. Bands, duos and soloists will perform a wide range of styles, including rock, folk, Celtic, Americana, blues, jazz, country, experimental, western and more! This month, don’t miss Baker’s Brew, an experimental jazz band based entirely on improvisation. The show is on Thursday, August 22 at 7:00 p.m. and is free to attend.

The Sidecar Music Series is back and better than ever as Hardly Sisters visits the MAIN stage for some original acoustic music. With influences from Blues, Country, Bluegrass, Rock and even Celtic, Hardly Sisters brings big vocals and harmonies to all their songs. They also incorporate various instruments into their performance, including guitar, bass, keyboards, mandola, mandolin and harmonica. They have a lot of fun with storytelling songs, as well as beautiful ballads. This tightknit group has decades of music under its belt and it shows in their passion for playing together. The show is Friday, August 23 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 and all proceeds go directly to the theater.

“Soundcheck” heats up The MAIN’s August shows with the musical stylings of Aaron Kellim and Lowpass Collective. “Soundcheck” is the SCVTV Community Media Center’s newest music series that provides a platform for young musicians from the Santa Clarita Valley to show off their musical prowess with the performance of original songs. Singer-songwriter Aaron Kellim brings an infectious brand of sunshine pop while Lowpass Collective fuses jazz and ethnic artpop for an eclectic experience. The show is Saturday, August 24 at 8:00 p.m. and tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for students with I.D.

Rounding out the month is Quiz and Recreation: A Parks and Rec Themed Trivia Night on Thursday, August 29 at 7:00 p.m. Think you know everything about Pawnee, Indiana? Assemble your dream team, grab your color-coded binders and treat yo’ self to some trivia over at The MAIN theater! Trivia Night is free to attend and is appropriate for any non-Eagletonians aged 18 and older.

The MAIN is located at 24266 Main Street in Old Town Newhall, 91321.
