[District Attorney] – A 29-year-old man accused of barricading himself with his two young children during a domestic violence incident and injuring a deputy pleaded not guilty Monday.

Calvin Charles Lynch of Canyon Country has been charged with three counts of assault upon a peace officer, two counts of false imprisonment of a hostage and two counts of cruelty to child by endangering health.

The felony complaint includes a special allegation that the defendant personally inflicted great bodily injury during the commission of the crime. Also, the charging document alleges that Lynch used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife, during the incident. Furthermore, the felony complaint alleges Lynch was previously convicted of assault upon a peace officer in 2003.

Lynch is scheduled to be arraigned today in Department S of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, San Fernando Branch. Prosecutors will ask that bail be set at $475,000.

Deputy District Attorney Garrett A. Dameron of the Crimes Against Peace Officers Section is prosecuting the case.

At the time of the crime, Lynch lived with his wife and two children at a Canyon Country apartment, the prosecutor said.

In the early morning of Jan. 21, Lynch and his wife were reportedly involved in a domestic violence dispute. As a result, the wife called 911, the prosecutor said.

Upset that his wife had reached out to authorities, Lynch allegedly armed himself with a knife and locked himself in a room with their two children, ages 3 and 5, according to the prosecutor.

Law enforcement arrived at the home and positioned themselves inside the apartment and near a window outside the apartment, the prosecutor added.

At some point, Lynch reportedly threw a TV stand out the window, almost injuring the deputies outside, the prosecutor said. The deputies inside the home then rushed the room in which Lynch was located.

A physical altercation ensued between Lynch and a deputy, the prosecutor said, and the deputy was seriously injured.

Following the struggle, the defendant was subdued and then arrested, the prosecutor added.

If convicted as charged, Lynch faces a possible maximum sentence of 31 years and eight months in state prison.

The case is being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department
