[KHTS] – When Castaic Elementary School students Bailie and Rylie Alber and Castaic Middle School student Emilie Alber heard about the vandalism at Castaic Elementary School over Christmas week, they decided to step in and raise money to cover some of the damage.
Between Dec. 23 and 29, music teacher Christopher Clewett’s classroom was vandalized. The suspect(s) caused at least $1,000 in damage by pouring floor stripped on the carpets and computer, discharging a fire extinguisher in the room and writing hateful messages on the SmartBoard.
Bailie Alber, 8, is in third grade and attends Clewett’s music class.
Her mother, Sunnie Alber said that as soon Bailie heard about the vandalism, she wanted to do something to help.
Her sisters Rylie, 6, and Emilie, 12, joined the effort.
All three sisters are girl scouts, Sunnie Alber said, noting that she tries to help them “be communally aware” and to think of others outside of themselves.
The three girls organized a bake sale in their neighborhood on Dec. 31, offering cake, muffins and cookies and asking neighbors and passersby to donate what they could.
Castaic Elementary Principal Denise Davis said that their effort “was so heartwarming.”
Both Davis and Clewett attended the bake sale.
“I think (Bailie) was really surprised to see Mr. Clewett come and really surprised and overwhelmed to see the principal come,” Sunnie Albers said.
Through the bake sale and personal donations by each of the girls, they raised $214, which Davis said would be used to replace the class set of recorders that were damaged.
Sonnie Albers will present a check to the PTA at their Tuesday meeting.
The Castaic Union School District is paying for the rest of the damage, Davis said – replacing the classroom computer and covering the extra hours for custodial staff to clean up the mess.
As of Monday, no arrests had been made in connection with the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Station at 661-255-1121 or contact the Los Angeles Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
