The Santa Clarita City Council will consider transfering the operations of its WorkSource Center to College of the Canyons on Tuesday at its first meeting of 2012.
Established several years ago in Canyon Country, the WorkSource Center moved to the University Center at COC in 2010 and has continued to be operated by city employees the entire time. The center connects job seekers with employers.
Last fall the city decided to put the management and operation of the center to bid. Two entities bid on the contract – one being COC.
City officials are recommending that the $150,000 contract be awarded to COC for the five months from February through June, with two one-year options to renew.
The Antelope Valley Workforce Development Consortium, which administers federal Workforce Investment Act dollars locally, approved the recommendation Dec. 29. Now it goes to the City Council for final approval.
“COC has extensive business partnerships in the Santa Clarita community that will assist job seekers with placement into local jobs,” the city staff report states. “In addition, they have over 40 industry advisory groups on campus that meet twice a year to keep a constant pulse on what jobs are available and the experience and skill necessary to obtain them.”
The staff report notes that operating the WorkSource Center is consistent with COC’s myriad business development activities including its Employee Training Institute, Center for Applied Competitive Technologies and Small Business Development Center.
The city will continue to manage the financial aspects and reporting requirements of the Workforce Investment Act grant.
