College of the Canyons sophomore linebacker Charles Ike has been named the Southern California Football Association (SCFA) National Division Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Ventura College in week nine.
Ike turned in a standout performance during the Cougars 48-38 comeback victory at Ventura College on Saturday, leading all players with 17 total tackles, including 11 of the solo variety.
Counting only his 11 solo stops and Ike would have still tied for the game-high in tackles.
Ike also had a pass break-up, with one of his stops credited for a loss of four yards.
Two of Ike’s stops came on Ventura’s final scoring drive, one coming on third down. Already one of the leaders on a very talented defensive unit, Ike played like a man on a mission vs. the Pirates.
“He’s a grinder,” said COC head coach Ted Iacenda. “He’s an old school linebacker and he’s been phenomenal for us.”

Canyons (7-1, 3-0) and Ventura (6-2, 2-1) entered their matchup tied for the No. 4 spot in the most recent California Community College Sports Information Association poll. COC was also No. 6 in the statewide head coaches poll, as compiled by the J-C Athletic Bureau. The Pirates had been No. 5 in the coaches poll.
COC will next host Long Beach City College in the regular season home finale at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at Cougar Stadium.
