College of the Canyons student-athletes Brianna Botello (women’s volleyball) and Sam Regez (men’s cross coutry) have been named the COC Athletic Department’s Women’s & Men’s Student-Athletes of the Week for the period running Sept. 19-24.
Botello and Regez are the fourth set of honorees for the fall 2022 semester.
Brianna Botello / Women’s Volleyball
Botello turned in a pair of strong performances to eventually help Canyons snap a three-match skid and get back in the win column.
The sophomore started the week by tallying eight kills and two digs in COC’s 3-0 (27-25, 25-15, 25-22) road loss at Moorpark College on Sept. 21. However, Botello’s brightest moment came two nights later in a dominating performance vs. L.A. Pierce College in which she finished with a game-high 11 kills on 15 attacks, good for a .667 hitting average. The Cleveland Charter graduate also served up a pair of aces to go with three digs in her two sets of action, helping Canyons get a convincing 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-21) victory.
The Cougars began the week as the No. 20 ranked team in the state and will begin Western State Conference (WSC) competition at Citrus College on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
Sam Regez / Men’s Cross Country
Regez was the top finisher for Canyons at the Southern California Preview hosted by Bakersfield College on Sept. 23, providing a warm-up on the course that will serve as the site of the CCCAA Southern California Championships in November.
The freshman from Canyon High School turned in a time of 21:36.8 on the four-mile men’s course to place 30th in the field of 247 runners representing 25 schools from across the region. Regez’ performance helped the Cougars place 12th in the team standings.
Regez has led the COC men’s team in each of its first four races to begin the season. The Cougars will next run at the Western State Conference (WSC) Preview at L.A. Pierce College on Sept. 30.
