College of the Canyons officials announced they’re offering students the largest schedule of classes in school history, providing seats for more than 51,000 potential students this fall, according to school officials in a news release.

The 2014 fall semester, which coincides with the college’s 45th anniversary, is expected to include nearly 1,700 class sections in a wide range of academic subjects and disciplines.

“There’s no better time to take advantage of these educational opportunities,” said Dr. Jerry Buckley, assistant superintendent and vice president of instruction at the college. “This is one of the most robust selections of classes I’ve ever seen and there are still plenty of open seats available.”

The majority of class sections will be made up of courses that most students need to either graduate, transfer to a four-year school or meet prerequisites.

The schedule also features a number of elective and exploratory courses, and several courses associated with the college’s extensive lineup of career technical education programs.

College of the Canyons CTE programs provide students with academically rigorous and relevant course content designed to develop the knowledge and job skills needed to pursue employment in a wide range of high-wage, and high-employment potential, industry sectors, officials said.

College of the Canyons 33 CTE programs include classes with concentrations in construction management, culinary arts, electronic systems, land surveying, manufacturing technology, paralegal studies, photography, plumbing technology, water systems technology, website development and welding technology, according to their website.

“Many of the college’s CTE programs are designed to help address the state’s current and long-term need for a sustainable workforce of well-trained and qualified technicians,” said Kristin Houser, dean of career technical education at the college. “These courses have been developed in collaboration with the college’s industry partners to ensure that the combination of classroom and hands-on instruction students receive meets the industries’ various skill standards.”

Students interested in pursuing a career in the aging services or health care industries, will find additional educational opportunities through the college’s one semester, 12-unit Skills for Healthy Aging Resources and Programs certificate program, which trains students to begin working with older adults in a variety of health care settings, according to the release.

Registration for the fall semester is currently underway, with students and community members encouraged to visit www.canyons.edu in order to view the current schedule of classes and take the steps necessary to enroll.

The college’s fall 2014 schedule includes courses offered at both the college’s Valencia and Canyon Country campus, as well as online.

Fall semester classes begin Monday, Aug. 25, and run through Saturday, Dec. 16.

As in years past, College of the Canyons will also offer a number of late start and short-term courses designed to meet the needs of working adults. Those courses are scheduled to begin throughout September and October.

Fall 2014 enrollment fees at all 112 California Community Colleges will remain at $46-per-unit, as mandated by the state of California.
