Preliminary data indicate a record-breaking $459.9 million in charitable gift commitments to California State University campuses in 2013-14—an increase of 36 percent from the previous year. While final data will be available in January, this marks the third consecutive year the university has seen increases in philanthropic giving.
“We are incredibly thankful for the unmatched generosity of our donors and partners,” said Garrett P. Ashley, vice chancellor of University Relations and Advancement. “Funds donated to the CSU by our alumni, and community and business partners are investments in the future of our state and ensure that students can receive a high-quality and transformative education that prepares them to meet California’s economic and societal needs.”
Donor support from alumni, parents, foundations, corporations, and other organizations plays a significant role in bolstering the high-quality education offered at CSU campuses. Through generous contributions, the university is able to provide access to a broad and diverse student population, build technologically advanced libraries and classrooms, and support innovative teaching models and partnerships.
Philanthropy in 2013-14 marked historic highs for the university, with charitable gift receipts reaching well over $295 million and the total endowment market value increasing to $1.3 billion. Gifts from organizations totaled $141 million, including $71 million from foundations and $53 million from corporations. As a strong supporter of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for more than twelve years, Mission Produce pledged $1.75 million to support the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Science. The gift will be vital in providing hands-on learning experiences for Cal Poly students and faculty through avocado groves on campus.
Among the 221,356 individuals who donated to the CSU system and campuses, many were alumni and parents committed to giving back to the university. Gifts from individuals increased 14 percent to $154.7 million, with alumni contributors comprising nearly half of individual donors. The increase in contributions demonstrates the power of the nearly three million CSU alumni who are giving back to help shape the lives of future graduates. Earlier this March, CSU Northridge alumnus David Nazarian pledged to help lead a $25 million fundraising drive for his alma mater, and launched that effort with a $10 million cash gift.
“CSUN provided me with a foundation for my later success and, thus, opened the door for many opportunities in my life,” Nazarian said during CSUN’s announcement of the gift. “CSUN gave me the chance to realize the American Dream, and I want to make sure that opportunity exists for as many people as possible. I am excited about the future of the College of Business and Economics, and want to do everything I can to support the College and its faculty and students in achieving their goals.”
