NORTHRIDGE, CA – CSUN’s Felix Mory holds a lead for the second consecutive tournament and the Matador men’s golf team is sixth after two rounds of the Sacramento State Invitational at Valley Hi Country Club in Sacramento.
Mory led after the opening round of last week’s Del Walker Intercollegiate and opened a two-shot lead Monday in Sacramento.
The CSUN junior blistered the field in round one with a seven-under 65, the Matadors’ low round of the 2015-16 season. Despite a second round of three-over 75, Mory heads into Tuesday’s final round leading Campbell’s Craig Hornberger by two strokes. Mory’s 65 is CSUN’s lowest round since Kyler Sauer fired a 63 at the Del Walker Intercollgiate in March of 2014.
“Felix hit it well in both rounds, he just didn’t make any putts in the second round,” said head coach Jim Bracken. “He also got some bad breaks in round two but I’m looking for a good final round tomorrow.”
As a team, CSUN is in the clubhouse in sixth place after Monday rounds of 297-308. Three teams were not able to finish the second round and will finish round two Tuesday before playing the final round. Campbell University is the team leader after 36 holes at 577 (289-288).
“We counted an 80 in both rounds and that’s just not good enough,” added Bracken. “It came down to poor execution and some mental mistakes which we discussed after the round.”
Freshman Tomas Skajem was one-over after one round but slipped into a tie for 32nd at nine-over 153 after posting a second round 80. Sam Engel is also tied for 32nd after rounds of 78-75. Senior Tim Snyder, currently 52nd, struggled to an opening round 81 before posting a second round 78. Conrad White rounded out the squad as he is tied for 62nd at 20-over 164 (81-83). Luis Calderon is playing as an individual and is 64th after two rounds at 21-over 165 (89-76).
