Longtime Agua Dulce resident Doreetha S. Daniels, who became the oldest person ever to graduate from College of the Canyons in June 2015 at age 99, died Sunday. She was 103. Services are pending.
Born April 25, 1916, in Hastings, Neb., Daniels graduated from high school in 1934 and came to Los Angeles where she went to work for an aircraft manufacturer and met her husband, Robert. The couple moved to Agua Dulce in 1947 and lived in a tent for about a year while their home was under construction.
Doreetha and Robert raised two children, Robert Jr., who became an engineer, and Raymond, who became an attorney.
Doreetha was always heavily involved in her community as a member of the Agua Dulce Women’s Club, Civic Association and Seniors Club, often serving as president.
Following the death of her husband in 1988, she traveled the world with son Raymond and decided in 2009 to go back to school with the goal of earning a college degree before she turned 100.
She succeeded.
According to Supervisor Kathryn Barger’s office, the Board of Supervisors will adjourn its upcoming meeting in Daniels’ honor.
