On Wednesday, August 1, 2018, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Santa Clarita Valley deputies conducted a Bike and Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation with focused enforcement on collision causing factors involving motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.
During the four-hour operation in the City of Santa Clarita, deputies issued 67 traffic citations to motorists. According to Sgt. Scott Shoemaker of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic office, the majority of citations issued were for cell phone use.
“Deputies observed motorists talking on their cell phones when they approached crosswalks – others were using the ‘red light’ as an opportunity to text,” said Sgt. Shoemaker.
Talking on a cell phone without using a hands-free device or texting when driving is not only illegal, but can be very dangerous to pedestrians and bicyclists.
Other motorists during the operation were cited for failing to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk, or failing to stop for a red light. Deputies noted that one motorist cited failed to yield for two adults pushing baby strollers across the intersection.
“The purpose of the operation was to enhance public safety and the awareness of drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists,” said Shoemaker.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Wanna get smart? Ticket the idiots walking looking down at their phones and not paying attention to CARS as they walk through cross walks and driveways!
They passed a law like that in Honolulu. Unfortunately, it’s not illegal here yet.

I didn’t know about that one yet. Thanks, Lisa Castañeda!
Yeah!!!!! It’s a start, surprised that all you were able to catch ?
Just take a bus ride and you’ll see all of them doing that right next to them
I did that and saw some!!!
Yes! Awesome! Too many people think they are above the law and continue to text and drive!
Thank you. It’s about time for the crack down. ?????
This has been long overdue glad to see you’re doing it great job
Please keep it up. Do it always, not just once in a while.
They also need to start ticketing people who have ear buds in. I can not tell you how many times I’ve laid on my horn to avoid an accident yet the person just kept coming over due to they couldn’t hear my horn. Just flat out unsafe and stupid. Its usually a Prius so what do you expect
Nice Prius driver dig. Never get tired of those. The stereotype fits so well…
Good they got busted!
Only dozens ??
Yes loooong overdue. SCSD should continue this. Add to this the ones still holding the phone in their hand while driving. They don’t get the “hands free” concept.
