A venture capital firm in Greenwich, Conn., announced Friday it has purchased Santa Clarita-based Newhall Laboratories, a marketer of beauty and hair care products under the La Bella, Monkey Brains and GroWorks brand names.
Details of the transaction were not disclosed. Brynwood Parners VI L.P., which targets consumer products, light manufacturing and business services, acquired Newhall Labs through its parent Golden Sun Holdings Inc.
“We believe that this will be a great new platform investment for our firm and look forward to not only bringing renewed attention and energy to la bella, Monkey Brains and GroWorks, but also to adding complementary brands to the company in the future,” Dario Margve, Brynwood’s managing partner, said in a statement.
Golden Sun-Newhall Laboratories was founded in 1976 by Cuban immigrant Al Rodriguez. In 1988 the company formed La Bella Beauty Inc., which targets the Hispanic hair and skin care product market. Rodriguez sold the controlling interest in Golden Sun in 2007 to an equity firm in Texas and left the company in 2009.
Brynwood’s previous acquisitions include the J.B. Williams Co., the seller of Aqua Velva, Lectric Shave, Brylcreem and Cepacol. Brynwood controls a holding company that owns Zest soap and and Alberto V05 and Rave shampoos and conditioners.
