A Bowman High School student was chosen as the winner of the 2015 Congressional Art Competition.
The five finalists and the eventual winner, senior Alex Farrell, were recognized on air at FastFrame in Valencia.
Farrell, who used pencil to recreate a portrait of Abraham Lincoln’s face, earned a complimentary airfare to Washington, D.C., to see his art displayed in the Capitol building during an unveiling ceremony.
The contest was open to artists from throughout the 25th Congressional District that Knight represents, which includes the Santa Clarita, Simi and Antelope valleys.
The winners included four Santa Clarita Valley students, including Alex. The other winners were: Alexia Ibarra, an 11th grader at Albert Einstein Academy; Ga Eun Dorothy Kim, an 11th-grader at Hart High; Lilly Imamura, a senior at Valencia High; and Connor Gilmore, an 11th-grader at Sierra Canyon.
The winners were selected by representatives from the artists associations of the Antelope, Simi and Santa Clarita valleys; Santa Clarita City Councilman Dante Acosta, who is Congressman Steve Knight’s field representative; FastFrame co-owners Randy Burzynski and Rose-Marie Longan; and KHTS co-owner Carl Goldman.
The works from the other finalists will also be displayed throughout the district before they’re returned to their respective owners. A duplicate of the winning piece is sent to the Capitol building, where it’s put on display for a year, alongside other artists from around the country.
