Three structures had burned and 500 acres of brush were charred by midnight Sunday as the Warm Fire raged out of control near the Warm Springs Rehab Center on Lake Hughes Road east of Castaic.

Two dorms at the rehab center were destroyed and one was damaged.

“We’re still constructing hand-line and hose-lace that we’re continuing going direct. we have dozers clearing contingency lines,” said Battallion Chief Rudy Medrano of the USDA Forest Service.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department, California Highway Patrol and Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station have crews on scene, as well. County Fire is assisting with structure defense while CHP and SCV Sheriff’s are assisting with traffic control.

“Right now, it’s small ground crews that are working to contain the fire,” said Deputy Tidbal, of the SCV Sheriff’s Station.

warmfire081616bCrews working to contain the fire had to battle rough, steep terrain.

About 150 personnel are working to extinguish the fire, according to ANF officials.

Aircraft will be grounded until morning, according to LACoFD Spokeswoman Stephanie English. Six air tankers, five medium helicopters and two heavy heli-tankers were used to fight the fire Sunday.

The fire began around 3:30 p.m. in the area near the Warm Springs Rehab Center, ANF officials said. The cause of the fire has not been determined. Both Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Arson investigators and investigators with ANF are on scene.

Southern California has “de-energized” power lines in the area.

The Warm Fire has the potential to grow to 2,000 acres, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Supervisor Miguel Ornelas.

Lake Hughes Road is closed between Castaic and Elizabeth Lake.
