Capping off a string of six matches over the course of 15 days, The Master’s College women’s soccer team beat Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 5-2 Saturday morning at Reese Field.

With the win, the 18th-ranked Lady Mustangs’ 2014 record improves to 4-2.

“We moved the ball and created a lot of opportunities,” commented head coach Curtis Lewis. “We are now converting those opportunities into goals, which is what soccer is all about. Katie Farris is just on another level right now, and the girls are serving her the ball into dangerous positions.”

Farris put the Lady Mustangs on the board first after connecting with Kinley Kane (Santa Clarita, CA) at the 6:54 mark.

12 minutes later, Farris scored off a joint assist from Kelsey Kukaua (Valencia, CA) and Elvia Contreras (Santa Clarita, CA), giving TMC a 2-0 advantage.

That lead carried into half time where TMC outshot the Eagles 16-6.

Re-adjusting to a new offensive attack, ERU got on the board five minutes after the break when Amanda Bennett scored off an assist from Kalyn Goodenough, tightening the score to 2-1.

Not to be outdone, Farris tallied her first hat-trick of the season off another assist from Kinley Kane, furthering TMC’s lead to 3-1 with 40 minutes left to play.

Almost a minute later, the Eagles responded to Farris’ third goal when Goodenough bested TMC’s goalkeeper, Tita Garcia (Colordao Springs, CO), scoring off an assist from Aime Jespen, bringing the score to 3-2.

At the 56:10 mark, Natasha Coyle (La Habra, CA) put TMC up 4-2 off a penalty-kick.

Farris then scored a season-high fifth goal in the 61st minute when the senior defender connected with an assist from Devon Goff.

After 29 minutes of a stout Lady Mustang defensive effort, TMC held on to its 5-2 lead and secured its fourth win of the season.

To no surprise, Farris led TMC’s stat sheet with 8 shots, 6 shots on goal, and 4 goals, while Coyle earned 3 shots, 2 shots on goal, and 1 goal. Anchoring the Lady Mustang defense was Garcia who grabbed 5 saves.  Collectively, TMC outshot ERU 25-11.

Now, the Lady Mustangs will take a few days off from competition and prepare for its next match. On Friday, TMC will travel to Cal State San Marcos and face the 15th-ranked Cougars. Kick off is slated for 3:00 PM.

“CSUSM is always a difficult test as they are constantly a strong, athletic, and aggressive team. It will be a good litmus test as to where we really are at the end of our preseason.”

The last time the two teams met was on November 23, 2013 in the NAIA Opening Round at Reese Field where the Cougars ended the Lady Mustangs’ season (15-6 (6-4 GSAC)) with a 1-0 victory.
