Cory Jones
You may recall we had eight baseball players with Santa Clarita ties drafted in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft two weeks ago.
Well, half of them have signed and are embarking on their professional careers.
Cory Jones, the fifth-round draft pick by the St. Louis Cardinals, has been assigned to Rookie ball in Johnson City, Tenn.
Timmy Lopes, formerly with the Valencia Vikings, will play for the Seattle Mariners’ Rookie-level Arizona league team.
Former Hart pitcher Casey McCarthy has been assigned to the Miami Marlins’ Gulf Coast Rookie ball club.
And Charlie Gillies, the first player in Santa Clarita history to go to three different Santa Clarita schools and get drafted – West Ranch, COC and The Master’s College – has been assigned to the Connecticut Tigers, the Class-A Short Season New York Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.
