[KHTS] – Richie’s Fight For Life Foundation plans to host a Fun Run on Apr. 27 to raise funds for Richard Gonzales, a 7-year-old Santa Clarita boy with a multi-system disorder.

The fundraiser is planned to occur at West Ranch High School from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Apr. 27.

Richie1-300x260Richie’s complicated multi-system disorder is caused by a multi-metabolic disorder that results in muscle deterioration, immunity disorders, heart disease, energy deficiency, nerve pain and more.

Richie’s mother, Vanessa Palacio, said the cause of Richie’s disorder is currently untreatable, but doctor’s continue attempting to ease his multitude of symptoms.

“[Doctor’s] can only treat him minimally and can’t stop the progression until they find the root cause [of the disorder],” Palacio said. “[The disorder] is extremely rare and it’s not in any textbook. [Doctors] try their best to slow progression but they can’t treat it, and there is no cure for it.”

Overall, Richie has had more than 250 blood draws, 12 surgical procedures and 9 surgeries.

He is currently being treated at Children’s Hospital of Orange County, Palacio said.

Palacio said the Fun Run is one way to keep up with the mounting medical costs of Richie’s many procedures and tests.

“In order to continually treat him, it’s an extreme amount of money,” Palacio said. “I have liquidated all of my assets now that he his 7, and I no longer have $40,000 plus a year to pay for everything he needs. He is about to have a huge test that [the Doctor’s] hope will help find a cure.”

Richie’s Fight For Life Foundation was set up by Palacio in 2011 to help Richie, and other families with children struggling with similar problems, Palacio said.

How to donate

For those interested in donating or sponsoring the Fun Run, call Vanessa Palacio at 661-212-8675, or click here to donate online. The entry fee for the event is $15.00 a person.
