The staff of William S. Hart Regional County Park and the Friends of Hart Park are pleased to announce that Roger Basham has been named the Hart Park Volunteer of the Month for September 2016.
Roger first volunteered at Hart Park in the late 1980s when he was appointed to the Friends of Hart Park Board. After several years of board service, a change in his teaching schedule at College of the Canyons forced him to step down from the board. However, Roger and his wife Becki continued to maintain membership in Friends of Hart Park and supported all of the Friends’ functions.
By 2006, Becki started volunteering at the Hart Park Gift Store, and Roger was always along to help when needed. When the new gift store was brought into the park, Roger volunteered to help finish the inside of the store by constructing the counters, cabinets and other interior woodwork.
To date, Roger has designed informational flyers and booklets for the gift store, built a shade cover awning, installed air conditioning and additional book store storage when needed. He has used his knowledge and skill as a former bookstore owner and jewelry maker and has assembled what is generally acknowledged as the Santa Clarita Valley’s finest inventory of Western and Native American books, one-of a-kind birdhouses, designer jewelry, gift and fashion accessories and Western-themed pictures.
For these contributions and his countless thousands of hours of volunteer service, Roger Basham is Hart Park’s September 2016 Volunteer of the Month.
William S. Hart Regional Park is a component of the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Excellent! Thank you, Roger!
Congratulations Roger, on this well-deserved honor!
Congrats Roger!
I had Mr. Basham as one of my instructors at COC back in the late 80’s. His class “Natives of California” was one of the best classes I had ever had. Congratulations on your recognition. It sounds like you have done some wonderful things and committed a lot of hours to help keep SCV’s history alive and well.
Roger, Congratulations! You are most deserving of any award.
You put Hart first and it shows!! Thank you and Beckie for all you do.
Congratulations, Roger. I am assuming you are the Roger Basham I knew at UCSB in the early 1960’s.
