The Hart School District has added a third scenario for governing board consideration following community input on the district’s planned change to trustee-area voting from the current at-large system.

The district hosted five community meetings in November and early December to allow for public input on the scenarios created by a demographer and on the California Voter Rights Act (CVRA) process. Parents and community members were invited to attend the meetings and additional comments were received by email.

Written comments submitted by local citizens following the display and explanations of the two proposed trustee-area scenarios at the community meetings has led to the creation of a third map, now being shared with the community. A public hearing to allow board members to receive additional public comments concerning the approval of a final trustee area map will be held at the January 21, 2015 regular meeting.

The three maps are similar in that they would split the Hart School District service area into five voting areas, each with roughly the same population. Scenario 3 is an adaption of Scenario 1 in response to public input in several neighborhoods.

This change to the voting system does not have any impact on current school boundaries.

The Governing Board previously approved a resolution to initiate the process to transition from at-large election system to a by trustee-area election system, as a result of concerns about potential exposure to litigation under the CVRA.

The new system of voting areas is due to be in place in time for the next district board election in November 2015.
