The Lancaster JetHawks dropped the rubber game of a three-game series to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, 3-2, on a walk-off single in the ninth inning on Wednesday night at LoanMart Field.
Drew Jackson singled home Johan Mieses from third base against reliever Alexander Guillen (0-5) to win it for the Quakes. Mieses had doubled to begin the inning and moved to third on a Keibert Ruiz fly ball to right field.
The JetHawks (55-48, 17-16) had led most of the game while starter Brandon Gold began his night with six shutout innings.
Lancaster scored an unearned run in the third inning when third baseman Zack McKinstry failed to field a Yonathan Daza grounder to bring home Robbie Perkins from second base.
Garrett Hampson scored his league-leading 84th run of the season in the fith to put the JetHawks up 2-0. Hampson walked with two outs, stole second base and scored on a Daza base-hit to centerfield.
The JetHawks totaled six steals in the game, including three from Daza, to up their total to a league-leading 213 on the season. They club, as an Astros affiliate, led the Cal League with 209 stolen bases in 2016.
Gold had tossed six scoreless innings before the Quakes put runners at first and third with nobody out to begin the seventh inning. Gold struck out the next two hitters but surrendered a game-tying double to McKinstry. Marc Magliaro came in and struck out the final batter of the inning before retiring the side in order in the eighth.
The JetHawks return home to begin a four-game series with the San Jose Giants on Thursday night. Ty Culbreth (3-1) makes the start against Jake McCasland (4-10). First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
