LANCASTER- The JetHawks were able to keep a late lead Wednesday night, beating Rancho Cucamonga, 6-4, at The Hangar. Lancaster jumped in front early, and Justin Lawrence finished it off with a four-out save.
Lancaster (28-31) went in front with three runs in the bottom of the first. Vince Fernandez tripled with one out and scored on a Colton Welker groundout. Later in the inning, Willie Abreu hit a two-run home run to the opposite field.
Rancho Cucamonga (28-31) scored a run in the second, but that was it for the Quakes against Brandon Gold. Gold (5-3) allowed just one run while striking out seven in six innings to earn the win.
Colton Welker added to the Lancaster lead in the fifth inning with a home run, his sixth of the season. Rancho’s Tony Gonsolin (3-2) allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings.
The JetHawks scored a pair of key insurance runs in the sixth inning. With two outs, Manny Melendez singled to plate a pair. Lancaster led, 6-1.
Those runs wound up the difference, as the Quakes scored three in the top of the seventh. Former JetHawk Hamlet Marte and Rylan Bannon each went deep to make it a two-run game.
Justin Lawrence entered the game with two outs in the eighth inning, and retired all four batters he faced to pick up his fifth save. The reliever leads the Caliofrnia League with 24 appearances this season.
Lancaster and Rancho Cucamonga play for a sixth-straight time Thursday night. Rico Garcia (5-6) faces off with Dean Kremer (4-2) in a rematch of the game between the teams last Friday at LoanMart Field. First pitch from The Hangar is at 6:35 pm.
