Trey Killian tossed seven shutout innings to lead the Lancaster JetHawks to a 3-0 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Monday night at LoanMart Field.
Killian (7-7) allowed only two hits and tied a season-high with eight strikeouts while issuing just one walk. The right-hander had been 0-5 in his last five starts. The outing marked his longest start since he tossed eight innings on May 28 against Inland Empire.
The JetHawks (55-46, 17-14) are now a season-high nine games above .500 and tied the Quakes (55-46, 19-12) atop the South Division overall standings with the victory.
Garrett Hampson led off the top of the first with a walk and moved to third on a Yonathan Daza base hit. He scored his league-leading 83rd run later in the frame on a Hamlet Marte double.
Lancaster didn’t score another run until the eighth inning when Collin Ferguson drove home two runs with a single against reliever Dean Kremer. It was Ferguson’s third hit of the game.
Michael Boyle (4-2) took the loss for the Quakes. The left-hander allowed one run over three innings in his first start of the season.
Logan Cozart walked two but strike out the side in a scoreless eighth inning and J.D. Hammer delivered a scoreless ninth inning for his sixth save.
The shutout was the eighth of the season for the JetHawks tying them with Modesto for the most in the Cal League.
The series continues on Tuesday at LoanMart Field. Jesus Tinoco (7-2) makes the start for the JetHawks against Devin Smeltzer (3-3). First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
