John Gasparyan, an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer and Canyon Country resident, died when his motorcycle crashed in Porter Ranch around 6:50 p.m. Thursday.
Gasparyan, 34, collided with a white sedan that was making a U-turn near the intersection of Tampa Avenue and Chatsworth Street, according to LAPD officials.
Gasparyan was gravely injured, and pronounced dead at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.
The driver of the sedan remained at the scene and cooperated with first responders and investigators, officials said. The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
“Tonight will be tough — we tragically lost a @LAPDVTD Officer to an off-duty traffic collision. Keep his family in your thoughts and prayers,” LAPD Chief Charlie Beck tweeted at 11:31 p.m.
“It is an awfully sad evening here for the Los Angles Police Department,” LAPD spokesman Josh Rubenstein told reporters Thursday night.
Gasparyan was a traffic collision investigator stationed at LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division.
“Our hearts are heavy today as we remember one of our own who dedicated himself to keeping our streets safe. “John is a champion,” read a tweet from the station this morning at 7:13.
Gasparyan, a resident of the Fair Oaks neighborhood in Canyon Country, was married with a 6-year-old daughter, officials said.
He would have turned 35 on October 12.

RIP brother
This is without a doubt sad, but I just can’t help to think how fast he was going on his motorcycle I mean they didn’t mention that, if this person was not a police officer they would probably mention that fact. Sad either way but c’mon most motorists drive pretty freaken fast Karla Love-Reyes what you think
According to the news someone made a uturn in front of him.
Somebody made a u turn in front of him!!!
Yes I read the article in full, that could have happened to anyone my point being is that if this happened to anyone that isn’t a police officer they would mention that the person was probably speeding or reports that the motorist was speeding etc etc but since he is an officer they don’t put it in those words, like I said it’s sad all around and I do have respect for police officers but let’s be honest, anyone who drives a motorcycle can easily get addicted to the excitement of speed
Or maybe he wasn’t speeding! So then there would be no reason to put it in the article! ?♀️
Deborah Conant maybe goes both ways
He was cut off by a car, my bro in law died the same way. It was an accident and I think picking apart the details is not for us. We should feel for all involved and for those who are suffering the loss.
A man lost his life. Speculating isn’t really necessary! Condolences to his loved ones.
??
Really sad story but the speed it’s def. a huge fact ?
Angel Reyes proven fact he was not speeding!!!
Sarah Lynn Schreiner I remember that all to well!!!
Natalie Rollins Norwood me too girl. Like it was yesterday.
The person who hit him turned in front of him. Speed would not have made a difference.
It was an illegal U turn and the motorcycle was in a 45mph zone and was not speeding. It was an accident.
Victim blaming? For shame!
RIP
So sad !
