This week’s SCVTV/AMG & Associates Student Athlete of the Week is Luke Maxfield from Hart.
With a 4.08 GPA, Luke finds plenty of motivation to do well in the classroom from the football field.
“You know, if you have something bad, like a 2.0 or something like that, there’s the danger that you can’t play football… you can’t play in the games,” Luke said. “And of course, there’s the whole college thing. With the higher GPA there’s a higher college acceptance rate, etc. So if you do your work in the classroom you get to come out onto the football field… It makes for a (good thing).”
Luke decided right after ninth grade that he would need to do the work academically if he wanted to get into the college of his choice later.
“There were times when I was an average student,” he said. “There were times when I wasn’t exactly exemplary. But I was always at least okay. But then it occurred to me that I actually had to start doing work to get into college, so I really stepped up my game.”
Looking to study either engineering or history in college, Luke points to USC, Washington and West Point as college on his list. But one school stands out above the rest.
“I’m seeking admission to the United States Naval Academy and the competition for admittance is rigorous,” Luke said. “So once I realized I wanted to go there I really really stepped up my game, because, you know, I have to.”
Congratulations to Luke Maxfield from Hart High School, our SCVTV/AMG & Associates Student Athlete of the Week.
