NORTHRIDGE – After leading CSUN Men’s Basketball to a pair of road wins to start conference play, sophomore Terrell Gomez has received Big West Player of the Week accolades, the league office announced on Monday.
Gomez averaged 27.5 points per game on 57.6 percent shooting in a pair of tight wins over UC Riverside (84-83) and Cal Poly (78-74) as he played in all but four minutes. The 5-foot-8 guard also shot 58.8 percent from 3-point range (10-of-17) and posted 2.0 steals per game.
Originally from Los Angeles, Gomez is posting career highs in several offensive categories this season. Gomez leads the Big West in 3-point field goals made (63) while he is second in points per game (19.4), behind only teammate Lamine Diane (23.9 points). He is also shooting 48.0 percent from the field, 43.2 percent from 3-point range and 83.1 percent at the foul line. Nationally, Gomez is fourth in the nation in minutes per game (38.3) and eighth in 3-point field goals made.
Last Wednesday, Gomez scored a career-high 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting in a come-from-behind 84-83 win at UC Riverside. Gomez collected 19 points in the second half to help CSUN erase a seven-point halftime deficit. He knocked down 6-of-9 shots in the second half including going 3-of-5 from 3-point range to help hold off the Highlanders down the stretch.
Three nights later, Gomez led the Matadors offensively again, this time scoring 23 points in an overtime triumph at Cal Poly, 78-74. Gomez helped spearhead a second-half comeback as the Matadors erased a Mustang 10-point lead, eventually sending the game to overtime. In the extra session, Gomez hit two free throws with two minutes left to give the Matadors a lead they would not relinquish. Gomez also found Darius Brown II for a 3-pointer late to help seal the win.
Three Big West Player of the Week awards have been handed out to Matadors this season. Diane has earned the other two awards for CSUN on December 3 and December 24.
Gomez and the Matadors return to the court Thursday when they host Hawai’i on The Blacktop at The Matadome at 7:00 p.m. The game will air live on ESPN3.
