The Master’s University men’s soccer team knows all about the joy of a golden goal. As recently as eight days ago, the Mustangs experienced that when they beat No. 8 Vanguard.
However, on Wednesday evening in La Mirada, the Mustangs endured the opposite emotion when 12th-ranked Biola used a splendid bicycle kick 4:59 into overtime to eke out a 1-0 victory.
The Mustangs’ first shutout loss of the 2016 campaign snapped a three-match winning streak and dropped the club to 6-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the GSAC.
Nearly at a loss for words following the match, TMU head coach Jim Rickard said, “It was a heartbreaking loss. It’s hard to lose when you put your heart fully into it. Biola played a solid game throughout and was able to win with a spectacular goal.”
That “spectacular goal” was scored by Leonardo Contreras, who took a header from teammate Sammy McKay and scissor-kicked it over his head and past Mustang keeper Kyle Cunningham in the 95th minute. The game-winner capped off an evening dominated by Eagle shot-taking and lost opportunities by the Mustangs.
Although the Eagles outshot The Master’s 27-17 overall, the Mustangs put more shots on goal (5-2) only to be frustrated at every opportunity by Biola goalie Igor Puglia. The junior keeper recorded five saves, including four in the first half and another three seconds into overtime when he stopped a shot by Lloyd Virgill.
The Mustangs get an opportunity to bounce back on Saturday when they play at San Diego Christian. The match will be played at Cuyamaca College in Rancho San Diego.
