Men’s Wearhouse announced Wednesday it had fired George Zimmer, the company’s founder and executive chairman.

The apparel chain’s board gave no reason for the decision.

“The board expects to discuss with Mr. Zimmer the extent, if any, and terms of his ongoing relationship with the company,” it said in a statement. The company also said it was postponing its annual shareholder meeting, which was to be held today.

Zimmer, 64, opened the first Men’s Wearhouse store in Houston in 1973. Since the mid-1980s he has been the company’s icon, appearing in television commercials with the tag line, “You’re going to like the way you look. I guarantee it.”

Zimmer is nearly as well known as an advocate for the legalization of marijuana.

Santa Clarita Valley business leaders were exposed to him in March when he was the keynote speaker at the Valley Industrial Association’s annual business-to-business (B2B) luncheon.

Men’s Wearhouse has 1,143 stores under the Men’s Wearhouse, Moores and K&G brand names.

A display ad featuring Zimmer continued to appear on the company’s website as of Wednesday afternoon (below).
